Meet Dr. Baris:
Since the time that Dr. Baris was a child, she knew that she wanted to help animals. Much to her parents’ consternation, she brought home all manner of animals and soon had collected quite the menagerie. She enjoyed performing orthopedic surgery on her model horses, using tape and Elmer’s Glue. Her first pet was a kitten named Fuzzy who was adopted from a shelter for Dr. Baris’ fourth birthday. Dr. Baris was very involved in 4-H and learned how to care for rabbits and horses through her different clubs. She fell in love with horseback riding after her first pony ride and she continues to ride to this day. 4-H also allowed her to shadow a veterinarian and gain some exposure to the profession. Upon graduating high school, Dr. Baris attended Yale University and received her degree in biology. She was captain of the Yale Equestrian Team and worked as an equestrian camp counselor, teaching children proper care and riding of horses. She worked over the summers as a kennel attendant at a local veterinary hospital. While most of her friends
were applying to medical school, Dr. Baris dreamed of attending veterinary school. Dr. Baris attended the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical School and graduated with honors in 2000. Her studies included a wide range of species and she always thought that she wanted to work in a mixed animal private practice. But, shortly before graduation, she saw an advertisement for a shelter needing a veterinarian. Somehow, she knew that this was her calling. She felt that these stray and forgotten animals, society’s orphans, needed her care and compassion. Upon graduation, Dr. Baris became a shelter veterinarian.
This year, Dr. Baris found her way to Jersey Shore Animal Center. The staff, volunteers, and resident animals inspire her on a daily basis and she is excited to be a part of the team. She is thrilled to be able to reopen a spay/neuter and wellness clinic here. She hopes that the clinic will provide much needed services to animals in need within the community and also help fund the care of the resident animals at the center. When Dr. Baris is not working, she enjoys running long distances in the mountains, riding horses, and reading on the beach. She lives with her saintly husband, Mike, and their dogs: Pika and Parsley, cats: Fezzywig and Yosemite, and horse: Poppy.

~ FOR PETS UNDER THE AGE OF 5 YEARS ~
Spaying and neutering your pet is extremely important, not only to curb pet overpopulation, but also for the health of your pet. Spaying and/or neutering greatly reduces, or eliminates the risk of several types of cancer and can help prevent unwanted behaviors such as spraying, fighting and roaming.
