Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic

Do you love your cat or dog? Please spay or neuter them and help your pet by preventing unwanted litters, reducing marking & territorial behaviors and reducing risks of certain types of cancer and disease. You will also be helping to stop the overpopulation of dogs and cats in our area.

Jersey Shore Animal Center, in conjunction with the Ocean County Animal Facility and their Volunteer Auxiliary and the Ocean County Health Department is sponsoring a series of low cost spay/neuter clinics. The next clinic will be held on Monday, July 28th, 2008. The cost per cat, male or female, is $30 each, and the cost per dog is $45. There is a limit of two pets per household and a weight limit for dogs of approximately 40 pounds (please call for additional information). Registration for the clinic is required and applicants must qualify for participation based upon household income. Income verification is necessary, however no pay stub is required if an applicant has proof of any public assistance, such as PAAD, Family Care, U.S. Food Stamps, WIC, the federal school lunch program or other entitlement program. Rabies vaccinations will be included and dissolvable stitches will be used for the spay/neuter surgery.

Please call (732) 657-8086 for additional information or to register.

June 24th, 2008 - Sam’s Progress

Sam received a good report at his first check-up. The ladies at the vet hospital were very glad to see him again.  He is easy to love.  Sam continues to build strength and stability.  His right incision is healing perfectly.  His left incision needs a daily topical antibiotic – he lays on the left side most often, thereby slightly stretching the wound.  Sam remains on strict exercise restrictions.   He is 100% housebroken and will cry when he needs to be let out.  While out, he likes to pick up sticks and crunch on them. In fact, they’re crunch-worthy while still attached to a tree.  Sam has met several new people and has greeted all with his friendly, outgoing, well- mannered way.  As stated earlier, he is easy to love.  Our next report will be after his June 30th appointment.  In addition to hearing he is healing well, we’re hoping to be able to remove the cone collar and for him to have the ability to walk freely in the fenced yard.  Thank you, again, for your support and caring.  He’s a great boy !

Sam Update - June 17, 2008 - Sam’s surgery was done on June 9th!

Below is an update from his foster home:

Sam is a wonderful patient.  When he arrived 8 days ago, it was evident that he felt discomfort and disoriented.  Who wouldn’t after double hip surgery the day before?  He kept looking at his hind end with wonder, “What happened to my back legs?”  Despite his confusion, he was fully trusting. Putting his legs carefully into a harness could not have been a welcomed process.  His appetite was poor for the first few days.  Friends – and shelter adopters/supporters - Marilyn & Paul R. delivered food drops of cooked chicken, beef and rice.  Sam loved it.  Staff from the shelter visited him twice.  He loved that, too.

His incisions are healing well and he gains balance and strength daily.  He is easy to medicate.  The care that Sam least appreciates is the application of ice packs to his incisions three times a day.  He doesn’t fuss, he’ll move around and look at you with doe eyes that say, “Do we really need to do this?”  Now that he is enjoying “chewies” again – they distract him nicely for the treatment.

He smiles.  Feeling better, he wants to move around.  He is restricted to one small room and bathroom walks only. He also craves interaction with my old German Shepherd which is off-limits until we get clearance from the veterinarian.

He is a love.  He gives kisses in perfect doses. Food & treats are taken every-so-gently from your hands.  This is a very special good-hearted dog.

Originally a stray, Sam seems familiar with a home environment and is not upset by common household noises.  He wasn’t upset by the recent rash of thunderstorms, either. Sam sends kisses to everyone who supported his surgery and is thinking of him during his recovery.  His first recheck at the veterinarian is Thursday, June 19th.  We will send an update – hopefully all good news – on Friday.
